How to Order a Portrait
Background information
To commissiopn a portrait is a relatvly easy process
however to achieve the best outcome requires an interactive approach
between me (as the artist) and you (as the client). Before any
work starts it is essential that I have a clear understanding
of what it is you want in the final portrait. I have found that
the process outlined below works well, and can actually be fun.
In fact it will get you what you want far easier than completing
long involed application forms.
All contact between me (artist) and you (the client)
can be done either by email, post, telephone (or a combination
of the methods), if it is not possible for us to meet face to
face.
Once work has been completed I will e-mail or post a scan of the
finished painting for approval. Payment will be due at this point.
Once payment has been received I will despatch the final artwork.
Stage 1
The first stage is for you (the client) to make
an initial contact by phone, email, post or you can complete the
simple request form (See Contact us
for details) with your details and particular requirements. At
this stage we can discuss and agree what you would like in the
portrait, size, medium, timescale, price, etc and how best for
you to send me the photographs or digital images.
I have included some information below on photos and images for
help.
Photographs and digital images: Additional
information to help you choose what to send
A good portrait can be produced from either photographs or digital
images. Scanned images can be used but this will depend on the
resolution and original size of the image. The best results
are normally obtained from the original images. However before
any work starts we will let you know if the images are acceptable
to work from. What ever type of image (photograph or digital
image) is sent the following points should be considered:
** The image should be clear and in focus, and ideally in colour
(essential if the final portrait is to be in colour)
** The image should show the subject's most typical appearance
and pose. It should also be a good likeness.
** For a portrait the head (in the image) should be at least
2 inches (50mm) across.
** For multiple portraits (i.e. more than one subject in the
portrait) the "heads" can be on different images.
However you will have to make it clear which image is to be
used. In the case of multiple "heads" on the same
portrait I will always send you a "mock up" to get
the overall size and positioning correct, before starting on
the final portrait
** Images can be edited. We can remove unwanted parts of the
photo, enlarge the image and piece together parts from different
images in the final portrait. However you will have to make
it clear which parts of different images to be used.
** One of the most important parts of a portrait are the eyes.
So the photos or digital images image should be clear and represent
the eyes accurately.
** All photos are returned once the portrait is completed
Stage 2
The second stage is for me to consider what we
have discussed and to review the photos or digital images you
have sent. I will be considering among other things the images,
composition, size etc. If there are any questions I will contact
you, by thge agreed method to dicsuss.
Stage 3
At the third stage I will send you (by what ever
method has been agreed) a mock up of the portrait. This is your
oppotunity to review the content, format etc and also for me to
ask additional questions before the final portrait is produced.
Stage 4
The fourth stage and final stage is for me to send
you a copy of the final portrait for approval. Minor changes can
be made a this stage. Once approved final payment is required.
Stage 5
Once final payment has been recieved the portrait
will be posted to you by record delevery.
